Founded in 1881 by a young woman determined to give a voice to the voiceless, the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) has spent more than 145 years advancing the welfare of companion animals through adoption, veterinary care, education, and the prevention of cruelty.

Today, CHS is a leading resource for animal welfare in Connecticut whose lifesaving work is completely powered by the generosity of people like you.

While best known for sheltering and adopting pets, CHS’ work goes far beyond its walls. Because the best outcome for a pet is often never entering a shelter at all, nearly 3/4 of the more than 5,000 pets served each year are supported through programs designed to keep them with their families.

From reduced-fee veterinary care and mobile wellness services to emergency financial assistance, pet food support, and crisis foster care, CHS removes barriers so pets and people can stay together.

Through it all, CHS remains guided by compassion and the belief that pets and people belong together—even when times get tough.
